Be honest - when you buy a Vitamin C, Turmeric, or Potassium supplement off Amazon, do you think twice? Do you wonder where or how it was grown, the testing thats gone into it, or if there is a a governing body holding the supplement manufacturer up to a set of standards?
Or do you search for it, click it, buy it, open it, and consume it?
Our team at Neurogan has started to ask the tough questions. While we hold ourselves and the consumable products we sell up to premium quality standards, we had started to wonder, is this the case for all supplements sold on Amazon? Let's find out.
The business of unsafe Amazon supplements
Earlier this June, Neurogan was visited by a representative from the Food And Drug Administration (FDA). With their guidance, we’re in the process of gaining Foreign Supplier Verification (FSVP) to keep tabs on our products and ensure the greatest quality for our customers.
The FDA representative informed us that the products sold on Amazon are NOT under FDA regulation or repercussion should there be wrongdoing.
Amazon is currently sending representatives to China in order to encourage manufacturers to abide by FDA guidelines, however, the current state of affairs means that products created in China for the Amazon marketplace are completely unregulated.
This means that there are no controls or restrictions on the products & supplements purchased from Amazon, which includes no lab testing and no FDA approval. Overseas sellers are making their way into US consumer’s homes under the guise of ‘Organic’, ‘Plant-Based’, “American Made’, and ‘Premium Quality’ labeling, yet there is no verification that this is truth.
Why doesn't the FDA regulate supplements?
Upon closer examination, we found that the FDA is in fact, transparent about not regulating supplements, "Dietary supplements are not reviewed and approved by FDA based on their safety and effectiveness. (..) When public health concerns arise about a dietary supplement after the product is on the market, FDA evaluates the product’s safety through research and adverse event monitoring."
The FDA places full responsibility of the safety and efficacy of dietary supplements on manufacturers and suppliers. So, the question that arises is, if overseas manufacturers produce goods that harm the American public, will they or can they even be held responsible?
How do I avoid unsafe supplements?
Learn to ask the right questions and take the time to invest in good supplements, here's how:
Research the brand
Once you've selected a supplement, research the brand. Do they have a website or a contact page? All reputable brands will have a website with more information on the origin of their products, a company contact, and a customer service team.
Check the company address
A lot of Amazon supplement brands say their products are, "Made in the USA". Though there are many brands who do indeed create their products in the United States, there are a lot more who simply claim to be made in America in order to associate their products with America's well-known standards of quality. By checking to see if the company has a US based address, you'll be able to distinguish who you can trust.
Request more information
On the contact page, there should be a help or support contact link. Use this link to contact the company and request lab results. A quality supplement brand ALWAYS tests their products to verify the purity that they market to the public. Within a few days, you should receive an e-mail back with verifiable proof. If it is indeed what it is marketed as, you're in the clear. Go Ahead and buy it!
Are Neurogan products safe?
