When you’re taking care of a horse suffering from joint pain or arthritis, the hard reality to face is that most medical options are costly and typically full of harsh chemical substances. Though these options will surely help your horse feel better, they contain a number of adverse risks and could potentially cause your horse’s body more trouble in the long-run. So, what do you do?
Equestrian lovers have experienced such issues for decades, feeling stuck in a rut with no viable natural options available, but as CBD is making its way into homes all over the world and showing great results for humans and their pets, the question has been posed by many: ‘Why not horses?’
We’ve covered how beneficial CBD can be for dogs, working with their endocannabinoid system to bring them a whole host of plant-powered benefits; but today, we’ll focus on the largely overlooked topic of CBD for horses with some help from our friends and experts at Mary's Tack & Feed.
What is CBD?
Surely by now you’ve heard of CBD, as it’s popularity continues to spread like wildfire. CBD is short for Cannabidiol, and it is one of the many chemical components that epitomizes the Cannabis plant genus. Unlike its plant relative, Marijuana, CBD is non-psychoactive and does not result in a ‘high’. And this differentiation between Marijuana and hemp-derived CBD is the very reason that it is rising to prevalence and becoming more socially sanctioned. It contains all of the benefits that medicinal cannabis contains, yet is extremely low-risk, with none of the negative side effects like increased paranoia, decreased motor responses, or appetite irregularity.
How does CBD work?
The mystery of why CBD works so well in mammalian bodies, comes down to the Endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system works somewhat like a conductor in a symphony, overseeing many of the most complex physiological systems in our bodies. By playing the role of regulator, the ECS promotes homeostasis and essentially levels us out, thereby positively contributing to both physical and mental well-being.
Horse-lovers are turning to CBD for horses because like a lot of caring pet owners, they’re tired of treating their equestrian friends with remedies that only yield short term results and don’t help the actual problem. With the help of CBD, you can help your horse support and maintain well-being for overall quality of life.

MORE ON INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE
Among CBD’s bevy of health benefits is its ability to help one maintain a normal inflammatory response, and it's this ability that is likely to account for the reason CBD works as somewhat of a catchall for numerous health concerns.
Inflammation is our body’s response to injury or disease. For example, when you wear a really uncomfortable pair of shoes, or get a deep wound somewhere on your body - you can often feel physical heat emanating from that area. That heat is inflammation, and though this response is normal for the body to heal, it can become chronic without proper recovery and thereby, unhealthy.
An unhealthy Inflammatory response and swelling can be detrimental to our equine companions. Chronic inflammation in horses can be caused by diet or injury, and is the cause of problems like joint pain, arthritis, decreased mobility, digestion issues, weakened immunity, and so on. When hemp-derived CBD is added to a horse's body, it helps to maintain a normal inflammatory response to support normal recovery.
Dosage is always tricky and takes some time to fine-tune. For one, given a horse’s size and stature, they’ll obviously require more CBD than a human or a dog would. The best rule of thumb is to follow the dosage instructions on the CBD product you’re purchasing. Monitor your horse for a week before increasing or decreasing their dose, and of course, always make sure to consult with a veterinarian or holistic practitioner to adjust the dosage to best fit your horse’s needs.
Choosing the best CBD for horses
As the CBD market grows & thrives, it’s important to be selective. Because CBD is intended to help to support normal recovery, you want to ensure that the CBD you’re selecting doesn’t have any strange ingredients that could be more detrimental to your horse’s condition. Here’s what to look for when choosing CBD for horses.
THIRD-PARTY LAB TESTING AVAILABLE
Every reputable CBD company will have 3rd party lab testing results available. Why is this so important? The Certificate of Analysis (COA) lists the proven ingredients found in lab results, verifying the CBD content, so you can be sure of what you’re purchasing. Make sure to ask customer service for these documents.
The holistic benefits of a full-spectrum CBD product, far surpass the benefits of an isolate CBD. Though both are effective, we always recommend choosing a full-spectrum product. CBD is just one cannabinoid within hemp, in fact, hemp is home to 113 cannabinoids. When you distill one cannabinoid away from the rest of cannabinoids, as some popular CBD products do, you’re potentially missing out on the effects the cannabinoids could have when working together in conjunction with one another.
THE RIGHT PRICE
There are a wide range of price points when looking for CBD for horses. And while it is tempting to go for a lower price option, it’s never a good idea to invest in a low-price CBD product. There are currently minimal regulations on hemp based products, so the market is contains hemp-derived CBD that isn’t always integrous. A higher-priced CBD option will likely offer lab results, customer service, and return policies that guarantee you’re making a safe and responsible choice for your equine friend (and your wallet too!)
Is CBD safe?
Indeed. In a recent report The World Health Organization (WHO) officially deemed CBD,“ safe and well tolerated in humans (and animals)", and the only situation we could imagine CBD being unsafe for horses is if it is purchased from a non-reputable supplier. The potential of purchasing a CBD product without proper testing or verification of purity risks the possibility of exposing your horse to unsafe chemicals. As aforementioned, do your due diligence in selecting the right CBD for your horse.
What does research say?
Researchers at Kentucky Equine Research (KER) are closely studying CBD and its effect on horses. Horse expert & nutritionist, Kathleen Crandell, Ph.D explains, “Hemp is hardy and fast-growing, and can be harvested for industrial and commercial products such as rope, clothes, paper, textiles, plastics, and biofuel. For horses, the two primary uses of hemp include bedding and oil obtained from hemp seeds. Hemp oil contains Omega-3 fatty acids, which are known for their health benefits. The nervous system of both mature and immature horses also benefits from Omega-3’s, as supplementation decreases stress, improves learning and cognition, and staves off the development of stereotypic behaviors, such as cribbing.”
